Afon Dwyryd Slate Boat Discovered
After many days of moving sand and water. Apparently there hasn't been so much coming and going down to the glastraeth between Talsarnau and Ynys Gifftan since that time when a whale was found that failed to return to the sea with the tide some time ago. Over this Sunday, October 24th 1986, like that time, a number of Talsarnau residents and others were seen walking down towards Ynys Gifftan and you could feel the intrigue and curiosity in the air - everyone asking and discussing what had appeared from the sand.

Ancient Tomb Stone - The Churchyard at Llanfihangel y TraethauAt one time the rivers Glaslyn and Dwyryd joined near the Church at Llanfihangel and entered the sea along Morfa Harlech. It was mentioned that in that period the Church was built to try, they say, to convert the inhabitants of Yr Ynys and the surrounding area to Christianity.

We know little about the early childhood of Lewis Holland Thomas, but we do know that he was born in Llanrwst in 1812. His family was connected to the Wyniaid family and Lewis used to go on holidays to stay at Gwydir Castle in the Conwy Valley.

J H was born at Ty ar y Graig in Talsarnau on May 29th 1860 to William and Beti Jones. His father worked for Mr Barker who was a gardener at the mansion, Glyn Cywarch. When JH was born his father earned fourteen shillings a week and on that eleven children were brought up.

The Conversation DGW - The first memory I have of him coming to Dalsarnau years ago. I was very young, and two men, if I remember correctly - Wmffra Williams and my father, going to meet him and carrying his harp up to Talsarnau and there was a concert at the school. I remember the concert and there was great fun there, with all kinds of singing, which pleased everyone. Questioner - Were you raising funds at the time? DGW - Yes, towards Soar Chapel. Questioner - You don't remember which year? The Turf Industry at Talsarnau
For those who know the Talsarnau area, most of the village is located at the bottom of a steep hill. The main street and many other buildings including the school, the community centre etc. are very slightly above sea level and in order to protect the area, a tidal embankment was built as a defence in the nineteenth century.

This is a translation of a report by Fanny and Ethel Holland Thomas - the daughters of Captain Lewis Holland Thomas from Caerffynnon, Talsarnau - from the book "The Caerffynnon Story" written by Heulwen Isambard Owen and Hedydd Isambard Owen published in 1973.

Two Drowned on Traeth Bach
'Baner ac Amserau Cymru Newspaper', Wednesday, December 17th, 1856. TALSARNAU, - An inquest was held last Friday in front of Mr Griffith Jones Williams, estate agent,on two bodies, namely William Owens and Edmund Jones, who were in the service of L. H. Thomas Esq., Cae'r Ffynnon, Talsarnau who were found drowned while attempting to cross Traeth Bach.
